The instructions are provided in four sections;
Section Number Instructions
1 Start Up
2 Handicapper Module
3 Database Management Module
4 Track Abbreviations
Section 1: START UP
You will need 310K free RAM, min. 10 MEG. hard drive, PC-DOS or MS-DOS
version 2.1 or later, (later means higher version numbers ie; 3.0 etc.). A
printer is optional but recommended to obtain hard copies of data.
Section 2: HANDICAPPER MODULE
Enter OPENMENU, and select HANDICAPPER at the menu. The HANDICAPPER module
begins by prompting for date, track/race nr. and names of up to five horses to
be handicapped in the race and the race distance in furlongs. You will then
be prompted to enter performance data for each horse you will handicap in the
race. The past performance data may be obtained from several of the more
popular daily racing forms available in the marketplace.
A screen will be displayed as follows;
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

Horse Name >>> LAST RACE <<<
Lengths finished behind winner ? Lengths behind leader in stretch ?

CORRECT (Y/N) ?
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Definitions;
1. Lengths horse finished behind winner...Number of lengths horse finished
behind the winning horse.
2. Lengths horse behind leader in the stretch...Number of lengths horse was
behind leader at top of stretch.
3. Winner Speed...Finish time of winning horse in tenths of a second.
4. Post Position...Actual post position of horse.
5. Distance...Race distance in furlongs.
6 Weight...Handicap weight in pounds.
5. Track abbreviation...Abbreviation for track as shown on list provided.
in Section 4.
The past performance data should be taken from the last three races run on
a fast track within 90 days in which the horse finished without incident
ie; accident, disqualification, etc. This procedure minimizes risks and
strengthens predictions. Winner Speed should be entered in tenths of a second
instead of fifths. For example, the racing form may show speed as 1.25 2/5 of
a second. This should be entered as 1.254, the 2 fifths being converted to
tenths. Also a speed of 1.05 4/5 of a second should be entered as 1.058.
Enter weights in pounds, and distance in furlongs. Use track abbreviation
as shown in list provided. Enter fractional lengths & furlongs in decimal
format. For example, 4 1/2 lengths should be entered as 4.5 etc. The
HANDICAPPER will not require data for the 2nd and 3rd Last Race to be entered
if the horse past performance data has previously been entered into the
database. The program will import the appropriate past performance data for
the subject horse from the database to the prediction module. You will only be
required to enter data for the Last Race. Even though the horse data is not in
the database, you still have the option to skip data entry for the 2nd and 3rd
Last Race if desired. However, this may reduce predictability.
The example screens shown above will be displayed if the horse was not in
the database and you desired to enter data for all three races. After
entering the past performance data, you will be given the opportunity of
changing the default IMPORTANCE VALUES or proceeding to ELEMENTS to assign
rating factors. If you wish to change the values at this time prior to
assigning rating factors, make the appropriate selection. However, you will
be given an opportunity to change the IMPORTANCE VALUES after the ELEMENT
ratings are assigned. Lets assumed you wish to change the default
values........
A screen will be displayed showing the following;
Importance Value Chart
ELEMENT IMPORTANCE VALUE
1. Speed .2
2. Class .2
3. Times in the Money .2
4. Jockey/Driver Record .2
5. Last Race Finish .2
Change value (Y/N) ?
The HANDICAPPER computes and compares five major handicapping "elements"
using predetermined (default) values. You may change these values as
desired to obtained different "weighted" predictions. For example, the
default value for speed is .2. This means that in arriving at the final
predictions, speed is considered to have an importance "weighted" value of
20% out of a total of 100% for all five elements. To change the value from
.2 to .6 (20% to 60%), enter .6. One or more values may be changed. However,
the sum of all five values must be 1.0. After the default values are changed
or not changed as the case may be, the program will proceed to ELEMENTS.
ELEMENTS
Upon entering ELEMENTS, you will be prompted to specify if race to be
handicapped is a claiming race. After responding, Y or N , a screen will
be displayed for each horse to be rated in the race. The data should be
taken from the horses past 6 races run within 90 days regardless of track
conditions. If less than six races are shown for any horse, and/or any one
race was run earlier than 90 days from date of race to be handicapped,
recommended race be passed.
For claiming races, the ELEMENTS screen will be displayed as follows;
Horse Name
Class

1. Going up in class for this race
2. No class change
3. Dropping in class for this race
Times in the Money ?

Definitions of ELEMENTS;
Class .....................
If claiming race, select...1 if horse going up in class, 2 if no
class change, or 3 if going down in class. If not a claiming race,
enter the number of times horse won or was beaten by two lengths
or less during the last six races. Enter 0 if none.
Generally, if a horse ran in a $2,000 claiming race in its last
outing, an it is entered in a $3,000 claimer, this is considered
going up in class. If entered in a $1,000 claimer, its going down
in class and MAY be considered a strong contender depending how
it ran in the $2,000 claimer.
Times In The Money.........
Enter the number of times horse finished first, second or third
during the last six races. Enter 0 if none.
Jockey/Driver Record.......
Enter;
1 If winning percentage is 20% or greater.
2 If equal to or greater than 15% and less than 20%
3 If equal to or greater than 10% and less than 15%

FAST RUN WIN
HITTER PLACE
BIG RED SHOW
Speed Horse >>>>> BIG RED
After analyzing all data entered, using the "default" importance values,
TRACK MAN predicts that FAST RUN has the best opportunity to WIN this
race. However, the strategy to use in wagering, may be based on last
minute variables such as tote board odds, last minute Jockey/Driver
changes, scratches etc.
After predictions are displayed, you may .......................
1. Change importance values and rerun predictions
2. Run data charts
3. Quit....return to DOS
Selecting 1 will allow you to vary importance values and obtain
new predictions, if the case may be. Selecting 3 will clear all
variables and return to DOS. Selecting 2 will proceed to the Data Chart
Utility.
DATA CHARTS
The opening menu for the data charts will be displayed as follows;
Data Chart Utility Program
Displays one of the following charts....
1. Speed
2. Stretch run
3. Class
4. Times in Money
5. Jockey/Driver Record
6. Finish Last Race
7. Quit...Return to DOS
Please enter 1,2,3,4,5,6 or 7 ?
Six data charts can be displayed for each race handicapped;
1. Speed
2. Strength
3. Class
4. Times in the Money
5. Jockey/Driver Record
6. Finish Last Race.
The Data Charts provide the handicapper the opportunity to graphically
compare data for each horse rated. Using BIG RED, HITTER & FAST RUN...

Speed Data Chart
A one "+" difference on the vertical axis between horses means about 1
"length" difference in adjusted speed, NOT 1 "second". The speed factor chart
is based on ADJUSTED data, not actual data. A horse that has a time for a
given race three seconds better than rest of horses doesn't necessarily mean
he is going to win by 15 lengths, ( 1 sec. is about 5 lengths) and it probably
wouldn't.
Now lets take a look at the stretch run data chart.

Stretch Run Data Chart AQUEDUCT/3
This chart shows that of the 3 horses, BIG RED had the stronger stretch
run, HITTER had the weaker. These results are obtained by analyzing and
normalizing data as entered for the past races. A one "+" difference
between horses on the vertical axis means up to 1 length difference in
adjusted strength during the stretch run. Analyzing this chart, BIG RED
appears the stronger stretch runner gaining UP TO two lengths on a
normalized basis over the leader during its past 6 races as compared to
HITTER.

Class Data Chart AQUEDUCT/3
This chart shows FAST RUN has been closer to the winner and/or has won in a
more consistent manner during its past races than the other two horses. If
this was a claiming race, it could mean that FAST RUN is dropping down in
class for this race a MAY be ready for a win. Each "+" on the vertical
axis for a claiming race indicates a "1" class difference relative to other
horses in the race. For other races, a "+" difference means horse has
finished UP TO 1 length closer to the winner during its past 6 races than
the other horses during their past 6 races. This chart shows FAST RUN has
finished UP TO 3 lengths "closer" to the winner on a normalized basis than
BIG RED.

Finish Last Race Data Chart AQUEDUCT/3
This chart shows that HITTER and FAST RUN finished in the same position in
their last race. Each "+" is the difference of at least one finishing
position relative to the horses last race. In this race, HITTER & FAST RUN
finished at least 1 position better than BIG RED during their respective
last race. Since HITTER & FAST RUN finished 2nd, BIG RED finished third.
When analyzing the data charts it should be remembered that the data
displayed is relative and should be used to differentiate between the
weaker and stronger, faster and slower. After completing the handicapping
program and exiting to DOS, at the systems prompt, enter ADD. (Do not use
the ADD utility until you read and understand Section 3). A message will
then be displayed indicating the number of records that have been added to
the database. (This should equal number of horses evaluated in the race).
Then at the C> prompt, enter TDBMS. The TDBMS database comes with data on
five horses that were run in a hypothetical race at TIMONIUM on AUG. 30,
1986. (These records can be deleted once you have an understanding of the
operation of the database). A screen will be displayed showing the data
for CAROLINA GIRL. (Horse data is appended to the database in
alphabetical order relative to subject horse name). It should be noted that
data from the handicapping program will be appended only to the following
fields;
Horse, Track/Race Number, Date, Distance, Post Position, Weight, Class,
Jockey/Driver Rating, Times in Money, Finish Last Race, Speed Factor, and
Speed Horse. You enter the remaining data after the actual race results are
obtained.
Section 3: DATABASE MANAGEMENT MODULE
At the prompt enter TDBMS. The main menu will be displayed as follows;
1 Database Maintenance

3 Return to DOS
Select 1, 2 or 3
Selecting 1 will display the data entry screen, 2 will display the reports
menu and 3 will return to the operating system.
The TDBMS database contains sample records for five horses that were run in
a hypothetical race at TIMONIUM on AUG. 30, 1986. You MUST maintain a
minimum of three records in the database at all times.
